7 of the best wedding movies of all time

Wedding movies are always fun to watch, but when you’re getting hitched, they’re also lesson plans. These are 7 of our favourite wedding movies of all time which paint a hysterical picture of what it’s like to get married that will make you laugh out loud (and give you some pointers).  Listed in no particular order, here they are:

The Wedding Planner (2001)

Starring Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey, this 2001 classic is an excellent wedding movie (and five-star romcom in general) for a couple of reasons. The first (obviously) is Matthew McConaughey. It’s about a talented wedding planner (who’s given up on her own love life) who takes on a big new wedding and promptly falls in love with the groom. Mix this with a charming dad trying to set her up, a hysterical Italian suitor desperate to marry her, and a boss who’s reluctant to award her a well-deserved partnership. It’s a recipe for a great Friday night in. The Wedding Planner, in addition to being a great movie, is also filled with some really helpful tips for brides-to-be – little nuggets of wisdom hidden throughout the movie that are sure to help you out.

Bride Wars (2009)

Released in 2009 and starring Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson, Bride Wars is a hysterically hyperbolic example of wedding jealousy. Best friends since childhood, Liv and Emma have always fantasised about getting married in New York’s exclusive The Plaza hotel (in June). As adults – they both get their wish – and their weddings are scheduled over each other. This movie, in truth, is every bride’s nightmare. But it’s just outrageous enough that you won’t have to take it seriously, and you can just sit back and enjoy the vengeful hilarity that follows.

Made of Honor (2008)

Starring Patrick Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy’s McDreamy) and sweet-faced Michelle Monaghan, Made of Honor is a wedding movie with a twist. Smooth operator Tom has been best friends with innocent, good-hearted Hannah since college – and shes the only woman he can stand to see two days in a row. But when she gets engaged to a Scottish aristocrat, Tom discovers long-buried feelings for Hannah that transcend the boundaries of friendship – boundaries stretched even further when Hannah asks Tom to be her Maid of Honour (get it? haha).

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)

Speaking of latent feelings for your best friend – no wedding movie list is complete without this 1997 classic. Julia Roberts (Julianne Potter) is secretly in love with her best friend Michael O’Neal (played by Dermot Mulroney) and she’s finally ready to tell him. But when he arrives, he has some news of his own. He’s getting married! Now, she’s been asked to be a bridesmaid to her rival and she’s running out of time to stop the man she loves from marrying someone else. And, of course, the classic song-in-the-restaurant scene is reason enough to watch this one again and again.

Bridesmaids (2011)

The most recent addition to the list of pre-2010 classic, Bridesmaids stars Kristen Wiig, a down-and-out woman who’s best friend, played by Maya Rudolph, is engaged. So she needs to buck up, pay up, and be a smiling maid of honour. But then, competition arrives in the form of another bridesmaid vying for the brides attention, and affection.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

If you have a big (or Mediterranean) family, this is a movie you will relate to well. Starring Nia Vardalos and John Corbett, My Big Fat Greek Wedding spoofs weddings with big families and it’s a loud and a half. Gus Portokalos is worried about his youngest daughter Toula – she doesn’t seem to want to get married. And she looks so old. But Toula wants more for herself than to simply be someone’s wife. So she studies hard, gets a job she likes, and starts to transform herself – enough to draw the attention of a gorgeous high school teacher who wants to marry her – even though he’s not Greek! A million Greek family members later, you’re in stitches and your own wedding suddenly doesn’t seem to scary after all.

Father of the Bride (1991)

Much like The Wedding Planner, no wedding movies list is complete without Father of the Bride starring Diane Keaton and Steve Martin. When his daughter comes home with a boyfriend (and later that night – fiance), George Banks is about ready to have a small stroke. And he hasn’t even seen the wedding bills yet! Father of the Bride is one of those movies that will make you laugh, cry, and want to go hug your dad. It’s a classic for a reason.
